Write for an Academic Discussion
You have 10 minutes. Your professor is teaching a class on education. Write a post responding to the professor's question. Express and support your opinion and make a contribution to the discussion in your own words. Write at least 100 words.
In many countries, university students spend most of their time on courses in their own major. Other universities require every student, whether they study engineering or music, to take several courses in unrelated fields such as history, science, or the arts. Supporters say this produces better thinkers and citizens. Critics say it wastes time and tuition money on subjects students will never use. What is your view? Should universities require students to take courses outside their major? Why or why not?
Yes, I think it is worth it. The world's problems do not fit neatly into one field. An engineer who designs a bridge also needs to understand how people in the neighborhood will use it, and a doctor needs to communicate well with patients. Courses outside your major teach you to see a problem from more than one angle.
I disagree. University is very expensive, and many students already graduate with large debts. If I am paying for my education, I want every course to prepare me for my career. Students who are curious about other subjects can always read books or take a free online course in their own time.
