I have spent much of my career arguing for the return of the beaver, so I hope I will not be accused of hostility when I say that the animal is in danger of being loved in the wrong way. Somewhere along the line it became a mascot, the cuddly emblem of rewilding, its face on tote bags and fundraising leaflets, and mascots are poor vehicles for nuance. The beaver is not a benevolent gardener restoring Eden. It is a large rodent with its own interests, which occasionally coincide with ours and occasionally do not, and the more it is sentimentalised, the harder it becomes to have an adult conversation about the trees it fells and the fields it floods. My other anxiety is about time. The ecological changes that beavers bring about, the slow accumulation of wetland, the return of insects and amphibians and the birds that feed on them, unfold over decades rather than seasons. A public that has been promised transformation may grow bored, or disillusioned, long before there is anything dramatic to show. Conservation has a habit of announcing its successes prematurely, and then wondering why support evaporates when the photographs fail to materialise.
