Many people picture underwater archaeology as glamorous treasure hunting, but the reality is a far from that image. Divers may spend weeks through a single square metre of sediment, recording the position of every fragment before anything is lifted. Visibility is often poor, and bad weather can bring work to a for days at a time. The rewards, , can be considerable. Because objects buried in the seabed are cut off from oxygen, materials such as wood and leather can survive in a good condition that would be impossible on land.
