For more than two hundred years, the lighthouses around the coast of Britain were looked by keepers who lived in or beside the tower. The job was lonely and sometimes dangerous. Keepers on rock lighthouses far out at sea might spend several weeks at a without seeing their families, and storms could leave them cut off for much longer. Keepers were for keeping the lamp burning through the night, which meant cleaning the lenses, winding the machinery and keeping a careful on the weather.
